Background of the Study
Efficient school transport management is essential for ensuring the safety, punctuality, and overall convenience of students commuting to and from school. Many secondary schools in Nigeria, particularly in Damaturu Local Government Area, face challenges in managing their transportation systems effectively. These challenges include unreliable schedules, lack of real-time vehicle tracking, unauthorized route deviations, and security concerns (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2024). Traditional school transport management systems often rely on manual record-keeping and verbal communication, leading to inefficiencies, delays, and increased safety risks (Okonkwo & Salisu, 2023).
The introduction of Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking technology has the potential to revolutionize school transport management. GPS tracking enables real-time monitoring of school buses, allowing school administrators and parents to track vehicle locations, estimated arrival times, and route adherence (Olawale & Musa, 2024). This technology improves operational efficiency, enhances student safety, and reduces cases of unauthorized vehicle use. Furthermore, GPS tracking systems can provide automated alerts in cases of route deviations, excessive speed, or prolonged stoppages, ensuring accountability and proactive incident management (Adebayo & Ibrahim, 2023).
In Damaturu Local Government Area, secondary schools often struggle with transportation inefficiencies, leading to issues such as students arriving late, extended waiting times, and concerns over student safety during transit. Additionally, cases of school bus misuse and difficulty in responding to emergencies have been reported (Okonkwo & Salisu, 2024). Despite the availability of GPS technology, its adoption in school transport systems remains low due to lack of awareness, limited funding, and resistance to change. Addressing these challenges requires an in-depth examination of how GPS tracking can enhance the efficiency of school transport management and improve the overall commuting experience for students.
This study aims to evaluate the impact of GPS tracking technology on school transport management, identify key challenges in current transportation systems, and propose strategies for effective implementation in secondary schools in Damaturu.
Statement of the Problem
Many secondary schools in Damaturu face persistent challenges in managing their transportation systems efficiently. Issues such as poor route planning, lack of real-time vehicle monitoring, delays, and security risks contribute to the inefficiency of school transport operations (Olawale & Musa, 2023). The absence of proper monitoring tools leads to cases of unauthorized stops, unaccounted delays, and an increased risk of student safety concerns (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2024).
While GPS tracking has been successfully implemented in commercial and public transportation, its adoption in school transport systems in Damaturu remains minimal. Schools often lack the infrastructure and technical expertise to implement and manage GPS-based solutions effectively (Okonkwo & Salisu, 2024). Additionally, school administrators and transport managers may be unaware of the benefits of real-time monitoring and data-driven route optimization. As a result, students continue to experience transportation inefficiencies, leading to reduced punctuality, increased risk exposure, and dissatisfaction among parents.
This study seeks to explore the role of GPS tracking in enhancing school transport management, addressing existing inefficiencies, and improving safety and accountability in secondary school transportation systems in Damaturu.

The findings will aid in the development of effective, technology-driven transport management strategies that improve student safety, punctuality, and overall transportation efficiency. Additionally, this study will contribute to existing literature on the use of GPS in educational transport systems, serving as a reference for future research.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to secondary schools in Damaturu Local Government Area, Yobe State. It focuses on evaluating current transport management challenges, assessing the impact of GPS tracking technology, and proposing implementation strategies. The study does not cover other local government areas, primary schools, or tertiary institutions.
